Asahikawa & Mt. Asahidake Day Trip
Asahikawa’s famous zoo, sake & ramen, followed by a ropeway ride up to Mt. Asahidake’s Sugatami highland plateau, is a perfect combination of sightseeing and nature activities. The day starts with a two hour drive to Asahiyama Zoo - Hokkaido’s best zoo - which is known for its creative enclosures and variety of endemic & international animals. We’ll then visit a century-old sake brewery - with free samples - followed by lunch. After lunch, we’ll drive one hour to Asahidake Onsen, at the base of Mt. Asahidake - Hokkaido’s highest mountain - to ride the ropeway to the Sugatami Highland Plateau for an easy 1 - 2 hour nature trail among small ponds leading to a series of steaming fumaroles (sulfur vents). Depending on the season, it’s possible to see wildflowers, the island’s earliest fall foliage, or knee-deep snow. We’ll end the day with a soak Asahidake Resort’s oldest onsen, with indoor & outdoor baths. At every time of year, this is an unforgettable day trip to the high mountains of Hokkaido.
